Sample Seminar Schedule

Day 1
9–10:30 am Lecture: Saved by the Brush
Learn about art therapy as a modality for recovery and rehabilitation. Includes a discussion on the latest research, examples of the recovery process and techniques for creating an enriched environment for adults with disabilities.
10:30–11:45 am Activity: Mural Paining with Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patients
Participants will have a first hand experience working with a group of patients.
12–1 pm Lunch
1:15–2 pm Lecture: Tips From the Front Lines
Learn about age appropriate projects, non-toxic recipes, materials and resources. Participants will have an opportunity to learn and discuss what works and what doesn’t, go through the reading materials and ask questions.
2–3 pm Art Project
Project with challenged residents. Printed leaf pillow—a hands-on exercise where the patients will make leaf prints from found materials.
3:15–4:15 pm Art Project (continued)
Finish project with challenged residents: Printed leaf pillow—a hands-on exercise where the patients will create a finished project out of muslin and Elmer’s glue
4:15–4:30 pm Break
4:30–5 pm Questions and Answers
Day 2
9–10:30 am Lecture: Leading in the Dark
Learn how to lead when your audience can’t see or hear. Elizabeth provides real life experiences and anecdotal stories about how getting people to do what needs to be done, even when they say, “I can’t!”
10:30–11:30 am Art Project
Learn how to draw a mural (especially if you aren’t an artist). Each participant will learn how to draw simple murals and create simple drawings to paint.
12–1 pm Lunch
1:15–2 pm Demonstration
Learn how to do art projects with challenged residents. Includes how to hold a paintbrush, cut with scissors, use glue and clean-up afterwards.
2–3 pm Art Project
Learn how to make a box with residents. Includes practical applications with challenged residents using scissors and glue.
3:15–4:15 pm Art Project
Learn to making fudge. Includes practical applications with challenged residents working with food. The end result will be a beautiful gift box of fudge.
4:15–4:30 pm Break
4:30–5 pm Questions and Answers
